As a Quality Assurance Food Scientist at Wegmans, you will work to assure we are providing the safest and highest quality products to our stores and customers.  You will do this through conducting supplier improvement product assessments, planning and executing validation studies, and developing programs that support FDA Food Safety Modernization Act regulations. You will drive scientific understanding and act as a technical resource to internal and external decision makers, providing them with the information needed to drive innovation, manage change, and ensure safe, high quality products.

What will I do?

  • Leverage technical expertise and knowledge in Food Science, as well as extensive research and analysis, to advise business units and suppliers on food safety and quality
  • Provide prompt and accurate subject matter recommendations to various questions from our Manufacturing, Merchandising, and Nutrition teams
  • Manage product sampling assessments from start to finish from Wegmans Brand food suppliers
  • Work with Manufacturing facilities operations teams to discuss product runs and educate on equipment and potential process improves to help enforce FDA regulations
  • Independently research and complete validation documentation for internal manufacturing facilities, to be referenced in FDA audits
  • Execute product recalls, coordinating communication with key partners, stores and warehouses, reconciling reported inventories, and deciding to escalate as needed
  • Manage relationships with external laboratories for Environmental Monitoring Program and shelf life testing; Present testing results to key business leaders to help develop solutions
  • Participate on various teams to maintain preventative control regulations and process documentation, including developing and updating food safety plans

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science
  • Experience with Food Safety and HACCP plans
  • Experience in Microbiology
  • 5 or more years’ experience as a Food Scientist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Food Scientist (CFS) – Institute of Food Technologists
  • Master’s Degree in Food Science
  • Experience in food manufacturing
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory inspection agencies (USDA, FDA, State, USDC)
